VARNISH build up in lube oil systems is the leading cause of costly unplanned shutdowns and resulting in lost production. The root cause of these issues is conventional petroleum-based lube oils, which break down and form Varnish and Sludge build up that will cause Servo Valve sticking, Oil Filter plugging, failed Pumps, Gears to wear, and Bearing failures.
Even small amounts of Varnish can cause a Power Generation Plant to have a “Trip” from a sticking servo valve costing the Plant in excess of $160,000 for a full load trip, or even $50,000 for a partial load trip. Not to mention the Plant isn’t making electricity and has to start downtime unplanned maintenance to get back up and running.
Industry research has determined that 85% of all failures in Hydraulic systems are caused by oil contamination.
